Great Shoe For Hiking
I've put about 60 miles on the Altra Experience 3+, using them primarily for hiking, and they've been excellent so far. They're lightweight and very comfortable, even on longer hikes. The outsole provides great grip on rocky terrain, giving me confidence on uneven surfaces. Overall, they've been a great combination of comfort, traction, and low weight, and I'd definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a lightweight hiking shoe.

Comfortable But Expect A Short Life
Probably one of the more comfortable shoes and the small heel lift is much more enjoyable to wear, the wide foot box which is great for my wide feet, and the heel cup feels pretty secure. However I don’t like the fact the vibram they use is the softer variety. Like, very soft. While they are great at gripping on wet surfaces compared to the usual hard vibram, I cannot see them lasting long on pavement or hard abrasive surfaces including stones and volcanic rock. Not to mention, the vibram sole on this shoe is very thin. I’d want it to trade off some of the thickness of the foam midsole for a more thicker vibram outsole. The lacing also isn’t friendly for straight bar lacing. You can sort of lace it in a bar lace arrangement but the lace points is not set up for it and so you kind of get a diagonal lacing with weird spacing that doesn’t look good, which works okay but kind of a shame because bar lacing puts less strain on the top of my feet and feels more consistent than the usual cross lacing. I don’t like the TPU or whatever material being welded along the toes and trimmings, which visually looks and feels cheap, and I’m conflicted on the foam padding they use for the tongue and the entire ankle area because it feels too warm at times. The fabric used on the tongue and throughout the inside of the ankle/cup has me questioning the durability.

Incredible
I’ve tried about 10 different trail runners and these are the best I’ve had bar none. First hike out of the box was 15 mi and 6300’ of gain, second was boundary peak (top of NV), and third was mt Whitney. Absolutely excelled in all. Grip is great, cushion is good enough to dull sharp rocks but still have good ground feel. The toe bumper is a must for all shoes coming up imo; protected the edge of the shoe very well.

Altra, You Have Created The Perfect Shoe
These are the most comfortable, grippy, perfect shoes I've ever owned. Please, please just keep making them in more colors and DON'T CHANGE THEM!!! Every time a company creates something great they tinker with it and most people want the original model back. Don't change a thing except the colors.

The Shoe And Foam Are A Huge Upgrade
Massive improvement in energy return over any other shoe ive used with them. I was about to give up on altra but they turned it around with this one! Keep improving your foam and keep the drop options! (I cant use zero-drop!)

Very Happy Feet
So I started by ordering my normal Altra size: 11. This was perfect length wise until I did an abrupt stop in the store. My foot slid all the way forward and jammed my big toe. The width was too small. Then I tried the 11. 5 and neither issue existed. Now that I have the size dialed in, it is all good. I normally wear stability shoes in 11 wide (Paradigm 8 and Guide 19) for the road, and the Speedgoat 7 in 11. 5 wide in trail shoes. These just have a different kind of ride and fit to them compared to these other shoes, and it is very refreshing. In the 11. 5 size, it is the normal wide toe box Altra fit that feels closer to a zero drop with a softer landing. I live in Reno, NV, and for my typical weather, the grip has been excellent. No hot spots or blisters, and the heel locks down tight with runner loops. The laces are just long enough to relieve a little pressure on the top of the foot if I don’t heel locks, which is nice. The shoe breathes moderately. Some reviews I’ve read said the tongue was wonky. That hasn’t been my experience. It is definitely possible to get it to sit wrong, but you really need to work at it to do it. I will admit, however, it is a comfort focused tongue, so if that isn’t your thing, then………. . I have two complaints about the shoe so far, and both are fairly small. The laces could use another couple inches for a heel lock, and they need to change the profile of the laces. I can’t get these laces to stay tied if I really get after it. I replaced mine with slightly longer oval laces, and that fixed my complaint. My other complaint is about the lug depth and pattern. Getting to 5mil lugs and the pattern of the lone peak 9+ would make this shoe absolutely unstoppable. They are two very different grip experiences despite both being Vibram. Overall, these have been a great buy for me and my use case. I am not breaking land speed records, and I am not doing Ultras, but my 4-6 mile adventures over plains, single track, rocks, light mud, steep climbs/descents, and minor pavement has been enjoyable. For context, I am 5’9”, 224 lbs, moderate fitness (Hyrox capable), and mid thirties with no major joint problems.

My Experience
I need zero drop for my knee issues. These provide good cushion with good toe space.

Great Shoe, Close To Amazing.
The shoe has much improved features. I’ve had each iteration and am glad they tossed vibram on it. Kudos to Altra for listening, these shoes are super durable. Only thing that could make this slightly better is a layer of vibram like the lone peak + fully covering, and longer laces. All that said, they’re great, just got a second pair. I love these as a one quiver trail shoe.

Great New Altra
Initial, early review after 50 miles of use, so reserving one star ATM. Got these to replace my Olympus 5 that I have worn through the heel tabs in 200 miles of use. Primarily used for hiking and short jogs. The 3+ is super comfortable straight out of the box and has a more supportive midsole than the O5. I like the rocker and the sole has excellent traction. Hopefully it holds up a bit better than the last couple of Altras I’ve purchased.

Durable - 300+ Miles So Far
Bought these for training with the anticipation of ordering a new pair before my ultramarathons this summer. After 300 miles in them I’m contemplating if I even need to buy new ones or just wear these. Although they are definitely broke in I’m still not having any foot issues and they still have a solid comfy sole on them after all those miles. Highly recommend
